Cotton was first introduced into China during the Yuan Dynasty by the Mongols. The common cloth of the day was silk but during the Mongol wars a large proportion of the Mullberry trees needed to produce silk were destroyed. By 1289 AD special training schools had been opened to teach Chinese farmers how to grow cotton and in 1296 farmers who grew cotton were given a tax reduction. The cotton that is picked for Handmade Throws is all picked by hand in Shandong Province. The picker wears gloves to protect their fingers and once picked places the cotton ball in a basket that they carry on their back.

In China methods of weaving handmade throws has hardly changed since the development of the treadle and frame looms in the Shang period (1766 to 1122 BC). Since that era weavers have turned out lengths of cotton material to make into all manner of useful products.
